Hi I'm new to teaching and I'm looking for people's opinions on what educators have found best for students;
To use a nail trainer
To do nails on each other
To do nails on them self
This is for when there on the course.
Appreciate any advice xx

For manicure and pedicure I think it is always best to work on real hands and feet. Rotate the class so they get to work on the full range of nail types and shapes - not just their mum and best mate!! Be strict and keep it written down for each lesson!!

I think nail trainers are good for the early days of learning L & P though.

Ok thanks for that, I was thinking time wise too because maybe they could do a few nails if doing it on a training hand rather than one on each other x

Any other opinions from anyone?

Any preferences from anyone on there experience if going on courses ?? Xx

My niece has just finished her course, they were learning / practicing on each other. Half way through the course everyones natural nails were knackered and the tutor had to bring in some training hands.

I would say to start with training hands to make mistakes on and then as they progress using each other. A training hand and a real hand are far apart!

Thank you for your feedback, this was one of my concerns as they will also no doubt work on there nails at home also x

Sorry but if the students nails were ruined then that was NOT a good teacher . I have been training for over 15 years . All our students either work on each other or bring a model . In all those years NONE of our models nails have been ruined . It is up to you as the trainer to supervise correctly and ensure that this does not happen

In my classes numbers are limited to four students

In my opinion it is impossible for a single teacher to instruct on such a hands on subject ( no pun intended ) with more than four

A hand trainer is fine for a little home practice but does not give the real feel of live hands

Our classes require that at least ten full sets are completed on real people at home in between lessons and pictures at each stage sent in for evaluation

Fair comment, I would certainly teach my students correctly so that they do not cause damage I was thinking in between course if they want to play but anyway..how do you find timing with them working on each other though? As it would take longer to complete. As they would need to take it in turns, or do they just do one nail ect?
And yes when I sorted my courses out I have done it so they need to xompelte a minimum amount of sets to build a portfolio with pictures to complete the course and gain a certificate x

My nails were damaged too whilst I was training. We had enhancements applied and removed every week. We were taught correctly however as complete newbies there was overfilling.

Realistically, a college cannot afford to run an NVQ level course with a cohort of just 4 students.
Tutors will be supervising much larger groups and using a Nail Trainer in the beginning is the ideal training tool for students to practice on.

I understand what you are saying and yes the colleges do not have any choice. I was addressing the OP question as she wants to set up her own training not an NVQ as I understood it however having taken an NVQ I still stand by my comments that is is impossible to teach a large group effectively;)

Timings is ok but I need to correct myself - sorry . I take a max of 4 on any course but on the Beginners course they all bring a model so thats not an issue . However on my advanced and conversion days and workshops they can work on each other as you tend to be talking to them as a group in a small room anyway so all of them can take everything in
