Can someone please clear up what qualifications trainers should have for us therapists! So many courses on offer, yet no clear indication of who your insurers will go with. I know I enrolled for a course that needed extra insurance for the products required. There is a case at the moment where the therapist is being sued because the treatment she administered was not covered because the "trainer" she got her certificate from was not a qualified teacher.

The best thing you can do is check with your insurance company before enrolling on a course. They will tell you whether they recognise the qualification or not. The Guild accredit courses, and list those courses on the website, which can be found at: Beauty Guild : Training Directory.

Please note, these are only accredited for Guild insurance purposes. If you are looking to go to another insurer, please check with them before starting the course.

I have looked into becoming a hairdressing tutor/assessor and know that you need a teaching qualification like these HERE
and for being an assessor you need your A1 which is actually kind of like and NVQ as you get assessed assessing people!

From what I can gather, you don't need any formal teaching qualification to be a private company educator as in not an NVQ, VTCT, City & Guilds which are generallt taught at FE colleges, where tutors must have or be working towards formal teaching qualifications.

From what I understand, private colleges and the like need to have their courses and assessment regeime 'accredited' by issuing bodies, such as BABTAC, The Guild etc.

As has already been advised, check with insurers before undertaking the course, as, as you have already stated you could be wasting money if the course you have taken is uninsurable for public liability.

A while ago I had a conversation with a local H&S guy who said that in the event of a claim, the source of training could also come into question in the event of a claim/litigation. An interesting thought.

in answer to Cathie,

the accredition process ensures that the tutors are qualified, so therefore it is now necessary in the private sector too.

I get my courses accredited through The Guild and I had to send all my teaching certs and therapy certs for them to keep on record. If I use any other tutor to teach my courses, I have to send their teaching certs in to be put into my file.

That's very interesting as I would like to question how many trainers/educators at this moment in time, really and truly have teaching qualifications. I know that I don't but I have enrolled for the PTLLS course to get myself on the way.

Great thread, it would be interesting to do a poll!

I have my CertEd with University of Plymouth and as said A1 (Assessors Award) from City and Guilds is a must.

I have my teaching certs on display as well as insurance and industry certs - I think this is professional and reassuring for students.

I have a city & guilds and have my insurance with FHT & AIT I teach ITEC and my C&G is better than the ITEC cert so I dont need another and I am working towards my degree in education.
