I'm thinking of asking around locally if I could volunteer to gain some real on the job experience. I'm currently offering cost covering only sets at the moment to practise as much as possible but I'm yet to do what I would call a good job as I'm always presented with bitten, picked and tiny yet wide nail beds. I know that that is reality so having a professional to turn to for advice while doing the sets would be so much better. Does anyone know if salons allow this or will I just be looking like a fool

In truth I don't think you'll get any takers, salons are dependant on their reputation, leaving that reputation in the hands of someone takes a lot of trust and risk, which I don't think someone will invest in a 'volunteer' member of staff. Especially as you're hoping for hands-on training and advice as you go along, this takes time away from the paid working techs which will impact on the business. Yes they get your time for free but they could spend huge amounts of time and effort in you for you to just walk away one day because you are just a 'volunteer'. I'm not saying you are a bad person, or unreliable, but you have to see it from their perspective, you have no long term commitment to them unlike a paid employee.

Its not like you're a 'saturday girl' - washing hair, hanging up coats, making coffee, etc. for experience of a busy salon, you're asking the business to put their main money earning core business in your hands (excuse the pun!) it's risky strategy for them.

Trinity advises well in the above post.
To gain a wider range of nail types to work on try asking for models on your local Facebook pages. Be specific and clear about how experienced you are and what fee you are asking.

Thanks for the replies. I made a call anyway and a local salon has asked me to come in to do a set on her so that she can see where I'm at and if she can help so fingers crossed
