Thanks. I'm going to print this thread off to refer to if I ever need it again!

Have sent you my email :)

I was taught ever having cancer is a total contra-indication to massage am I wrong? X

We had a client with terminal cancer who wanted weekly treatments including massage. I contacted my insurer and they said it was not a problem as she was terminal anyway. I got the client to sign a statement saying she understood the risks. She became one of our top clients but sadly died earlier this year.

She was very understanding of my need to consult with the insurance company. If your client cannot understand that what you are doing is for her own good they are not worth having as a client anyway.

Do you think your insurance company would be ok if you kept a record of the medication and said that you'd checked it out to ensure if it was or wasn't contraindicated for massage?

I'm only thinking that there should be a far less onerous way for you to do this and the £30 is ridiculous.

I think the consultation is great and you're showing how conscientious and professional you are and I'm sure this will inspire confidence in most clients and actually boost business.

Just wanted to share with you a link to a free website as well to check meds, how they work and their cautions etc and it's called EMC medicines. www.emc.medicines.org.uk

I use it for my NHS job and it's really useful.

If have a consultation card youncanndocument 'client is on 'x' medication, checked with EMC and no contraindication with proposed treatment' and getthe client to sign saying they have been truthful about their history etc

Hope this helps x

Thanks for sharing Botoxboy. Thats a really good idea xx

Wanted to say another big thanks for everyone's help on this.

I will email and ask about your idea Botoxboy, but I have an awful feeling they'd say no.

Can I ask what insurer's you're with that let you do that? Is it a medical one? I'm with the guild.

I'm with Hamilton Fraser but I do full medical histories with all my patients

Ah right, I've actually never heard of that insurers! Do you use them because of botox? Btw thanks for posting the link to that medical website, that's so useful!

Yeah not sure if they insure others? But worth a try!
