my friend came yesterday for me to do her nails ,she's a nail biter and had grown them out specially for a family party.I tried to shape them as best as I could but she was quite adamant I only round off the corners as took her so long to grow kind of makes me feel sad I guess I would of gone for shape over length so ultimately not happy with the result

I wouldn't have done anything different to what you have, I might have tapered them in slightly down the side walls, just bringing in the sides a little (slightly ballerina style) would have made them look slimmer as the eye would see them narrow towards the free edge.

You did exactly the right thing, you need to seriously encourage a biter when it comes to growing their nails, it's a big deal so filing off the length would have devastated her and knocked her commitment. Now she trusts you, you can start to encourage her into whats better shape wise as they get longer.

We all need friends and family when we are starting out but it really can hold you back. 1. you are doing them for free so they really don't tend to value them and look after them as much as a paying client would 2. rather than take your educated advice they either have unrealistic expectations or dictate what they want and can be incredibly picky

Take the plunge, once you have a few paying, grateful and happy clients under your belt your confidence will soar!!

I need to start building a propper client base I'm just terrified they will think I'm awful so I spend most days trying out new things and practising then doing friends and family free but your right they don't value what you do atall 3x I did the same persons nails in 3 days using cnd shellac because they had picked it off and then the other days thought shellac = titanium strength nails so bang and tap and pick as much as you want then come back for me to re do because it had chipped when asked how or what they had been doing they bitten them off was the reply x

Based on the above pic, I can see absolutely no reason for you to be doing nails for free.
You really should bite the bullet and start charging!

Hey I've been having confidence issues as I am also newly qualified but if your work is good (it looks like it is) and you are getting good wear go for it! Your clients will love your work believe me! I took the plunge and did my first proper client today and they loved it and tipped extra I am very happy I did it instead of waiting for ever x

Right, this is said in kindness I promise.....stop faffing with nail art classes and get sorted! If you think your skills are lacking with enhancements then spend the £50/100/whatever you are spending on one-stroke classes on a refresher/skill building/1-2-1 on your chosen product (gel/L&p). Whilst nail art is fun, more popular than it used to be, clients dont care how pretty they are if they dont stay on or last!!

Crack your basic, fundamental skills, then add the pretty stuff.

In truth, I often think many techs try to hide poor application skills with gems, flowers, glitter, etc.

I promise, you will gain more for your money wuth skills than pretty patterns

Absolutely what trinity said. You can paint nails so start charging for them. I found that none of my friends looked after their nails when I did them at a huge discount. They thought it would help if they put them through the ringer to prove how strong the products are. [emoji15]

I give very good friends a discount these days but I'm talking a couple of quid and every single one of them looks after their nails.

Taking the plunge is so hard but time to concentrate on core skills of excellent polish application and finish and get your work out there. Good luck x

I no I think I panic about things that haven't even happened like if someone wanted somthing and I couldn't do it but ultimately I know I'm only going to get better if I actually put it all into practice I also compare myself to proffesionals that have been doing nails for many many years forgetting that everyone had to start somewhere x

So what if you cant do it, offer the nearest you can, believe me clients are happy if its close and cant actually tell the difference
