I offer a friends and family discount the only people I do for free are my Mum, Mother in Law and Sister. My friends all seem cool and often want to pay more than I charge them!! x

Slightly side note but still pertaining to serving family and friends, my sister in law (a trained hairdresser) is going to highlight my hair next week...

I wouldnt even dream of asking to have it done for free. She buys what she needs to do it then tells me the cost, so I pay cost price for my highlights, but Ill still pay. And we are as close as blood sisters.

God bless my Sis.

totally agree wi Geeg... at the end of the day the products that u use for free have just lost u a set of nails on some one else payin xx:hug:

Firstly wouldn''t call them much of friends to expect u to do them for free. I've just finished my course and I explained to every1 that I'm going to charge. My sisters I knocked a 10 euro off the price, but at the end of the day I still have to pay for the product, petrol to come up and expenditure of doing the course in the first place.

Made the exception to my mum though! She's the only1 i do for free, unlimited. Thk she's paid her way to good nails, has been a nail biter all her life and is finally seeing a result with my tlc, nice to give something back.

If you still felt uncomfortable with charging then the example of for every 2-3 clients they bring, give them free set or infills, so win win all round.

good luck, at the end of the day your in this as a professional to make a profit and not friends, but it wld be nice to make both.

Its not just your products that cost you its setting up your business in general i.e flyers, websites, furniture everything costs and so I think they should consider that and although they say good friends wouldnt not pay you i have 'good friends' who think they can get free treatments all the time because i maybe gave them it once so that is stopping now. It's like paying for your friends to go get their nails done and also taking time out YOUR day to do it aswell.

I say to my family and very close friends 50% off treatment price and that way there no trying to work out what to charge when they say 'how much would you take for that?'. They know straight away they pay 50% or lump it.

Good luck hun im sure after paying full price elsewhere they'll soon be back if you give them a discount. It's always good to keep as many clients as you can for word of mouth etc even if its discounted a little. But always be sure to make them aware discount is JUST for them not for their friends of friends.

Wow...... I had this when I first started, and the better I became the better their nails were. And I had to put a stop to it, I did feel as though I was being used.

Not once do they bat a eye to pay for this service any where else, so I thought "why me", because I let it happen.

I stopped it, and explained the cost of stock, etc. So.......then they either paid the $$$ or I could no longer do their nails.

The incentive is a great idea. If they follow it through.

I agree with Geeg, amazing words of wisdom. :)

Good luck. Keep us up to date with how it goes for you.

thanks geeks! I am really feeling more confident in saying something to them ladies! and there is one of them who is male and wants free pedicures coz we're related. I haven't given him anymore (he had two just for practice) and loved it and the last times he has asked I say well that will be $x and he's like, nah, should be free! so I haven't done it. but when it comes to my friends I feel like I can't say no? I no most can't afford it but with the mates rates there is no reason why not.yes, products cost a bit especially when starting out. I feel you are not fully set up until you have spares of product for when you run out etc... once that happens I would feel better as I am paying off a loan to do the course I did, so money really is tight as if I don't have many appointments then more of the money needs to go on the loan.than in the bank.

thanks for all your advice.if you think of anything else I'd still love to hear

Hi Hun,
I agree No FREE treatments to mates.
My Mum won't even let me do hers for free, so I tell her she has OAP rates and wack a lump off my price list, then she still insists on a tip in my box.
I do friends at a special rate, they are fine with that.
I have a friend who is a hairdresser, she is caught in the loop with mates when it is a night out, poor girl ends up drying and straightening everyones hair before she can do her own......She says she doesn't mind as they pay for cuts , colours etc......But it can be unfair.
Give them a mates rates price list, put each one's name on it, then it is for them, they know then before they ask what they will be charged.
Good luck.
Lotsa luv x x x  x x x

Freebies are a waste of time.
If you are training and wanting to gain confidence in your work the nails don't get the fair respect of after care because they are free.
If you are buliding up confidence and skill after training and wanting honest feedback the nails don't get the fair respect or after care because they are free.
Why should anybody look after anything that didn't cost them anything in the first place

Not one of my 'free' clients from training and advertising nails are clients now because they now have to pay.

The only person I'm willing to give a freebie to is my mother and she allways insists on leaving money on the desk, usually more than what the treatment price is.

Stick to your guns and charge them, it's cost you to get where you are so it should cost them if they want the benefits of your work.
