I did my first set of IBD soak of gel nails last night, clear gel over white tips, and was really pleased with the results and so was she, they looked fab! This morning when I saw her one of the tips had gone a grey colour in patches, as the day has gone on they are now all turning this colour and getting darker and darker!!

Any ideas what this could be? I used the correct lamp and all the correct products, they were crisp white when I finished them last night? xx

Soak off gels are porous and can stain sometimes if they come into contact with something like newspaper, ink, spices and tan etc. (no different to natural nails really)

Some soak off gels have a special top coat that may need to be buffed off before you soak the gel... these top coats will not be porous and will not stain, maybe you should have used one of those?

I'm not familiar with that system I'm afraid.

If you just give the nails a buff with a sponge buffer, you might be able to remove the surface staining and you will need to re apply another coat of gel or top coat gel.

A normal top coat polish could also be used, as this will act as a barrier to prevent further staining.

Hi yes it comes with the top coat gel to put over it which i used. I have done everything as per the manufacturers instructions and used the correct lamp etc. The colour change is not on the top of the gel it is in the gel and only over the tips. She hasnt come into contact with anything since last night, just went to bed, then came to work this morning. I am wondering if it is the tips i used that have maybe reacted because it really is just the white tips that have gone this colour xx

Don't suppose you could post a picture?

It sounds very strange, although if the staining is bad enough, it would have gone down through the layers of the gel and may look like it's actually in the gel and not just on the surface.

Hopefully some Geeks that use IBD will be on soon that may be able to shed some light on what went wrong, although, as far as I'd be concerned, if she left you with perfect nice white tips and they are now discoloured, it must be something she has done herself without realising.

I am at work at the moment, i will post some pics this evening when i get home if i can figure out how to do it x

By any chance does your client have recently dark dyed hair? I'm only asking because I had something similar happen to myself and I couldn't figure out why I had pink tinge on my white tips.I had dyed my hair and subconsciously I was always messing with it.

Just a thought anyway :)

Hi that is a good point, her hair has been dyed dark brown but I just asked her and she dyed it 6 weeks ago + so i dont think it can be that.

I have so many people wanting me to do their nails because I am training and cheap they want to get in there before im qualified and charging full price, and I desperately need the practice but I dont feel right doing peoples nails even though only charging a small amount, just in case this happens to all of them so I have put off lots of potential clients just in case! its doing my head in! I just want to crack on with it but dont know whether to risk it? xxx

This is definitely just surface staining and could be from new jeans, or anything like that.

Try giving them a really good clean with some non acetone remover and you should be able to buff out any stains that are left on the nails.

Suede is another culprit, so if she has a suede jacket or boots, it could have been caused by the dye from that.

It's nothing you have done, it's just the way soak off gels are, as they are so porous, but this is why they usually have a different top coat as a finish to prevent this.

Does she read a newspaper? That might cause a stain like that

Vicki xx

nope she doesnt read newspapers and doesnt wear anything like swede etc. The top coat i used is the one recommended for that brand which is Ultra Seal. Do you really think it is nothing I have done? Its just I was so proud of them i thought they were good for a first attempt but my confidence is knocked big time now. If its that easy for them to stain though isnt it just going to happen to everyone? xx

It does look like ink or dye on the nails.

Is it possible for you to do a nail on yourself? Rule out the actual product then? Just to put your mind at rest.

Is there any chance your client filed her nail with a black file? I did this before with my soak off (non builder gel) and it left black marks ( never did that again!)

As An*Gel said about giving them a clean with non acetone remover might fix it.

I really hope you can get to the bottom of it xxx

Thanks for all your help. i have long natural nails so cant put a tip on but will try putting it on a practice tip and see what happens. Not much else I can do I suppose xxx

Let us know how you get on xx

It couldn't be mascara could it? This happened once with me before I trained in nails and I had french Bio gel on - I had rubbed my eyes and my nails went just like in your pic! The mascara took ages to clean off as it was like it was ingrained into the gel but it finally came out after scrubbing with isopropyl alcohol. HTH xxxx

Oh that's a good point! I'm a terrible mascara picker and I do stain even my natural nails.
