Hi ladies,

I need some advice, I have a doctors appt this evening so will ask for advice then but from a business point of view what would you do?...

I have woken up this morning and my 9 month old little boy appears to have signs of chicken pox, of course he is my priority but I also have the busiest week (self employed)!

I’ve not dealt with chicken pox before, is it contagious? Should I stay away from clients? If so, how long for? What would you tell your clients?

Thanks for any advice x

Chicken pox is highly contagious through the early stages. I'd heed the advice the doctor gives.

Not only do you risk passing Chicken Pox on, but also Shingles to those who haven’t ever had the Pox before.

Take the GP’s advice on this one.

Have you had chicken pox? Will your son be in contact with your clients?

Chicken pox is most contagious before the spots appear and stops being so when they have scabbed over. If your son won’t be in contact with your clients and assuming you’ve already had it then I see no reason not to work. As a precaution you could always give your clients the option, particularly if they are elderly or pregnant as they will be more vulnerable.

If you decide to work, please tell all your clients and give them the opportunity to cancel their appointment. I’ve known people who’ve had chicken pox in their childhood catch it again from their children. In particular, clients with compromised immune systems for instance, can become seriously ill from the chicken pox virus.

I'd be bloody livid if a client gave me chicken pox, I also feel it works both ways. If a member of staff came to work ill they'd be sent straight home, no one wants to be known as "that salon?".

I would take the advice from your GP. Chicken pox Is very contagious before they start to heal.

A few years back my daughter caught the chicken pox, I stayed off work with her (I worked with the under 16's, so I was not allowed in work or near a GP surgery). I collected my little sister from school (who had already had chicken pox as a baby). My mother came to collect my sister- she didn't even come out of her car! The next day she rang me to say she is off work as she has the chicken pox really bad. Bear in mind my mother already had them as a child. My daughter was not in contact with my mother, however she contracted it via my little sister. She was ill for 3 weeks, before they started to heal, and was not allowed in work for those 3 weeks. She worked with the under 16's as well.
