After 5 years of various training, working full time in a different industry, having a baby and now currently due my 2nd baby anytime now I'm finally going to work hopefully, eventually full time as a Beauty Therapist.

My husband attends a gym that is predominently a male gym but does have a small female client base which they are looking to increase. I asked him to ask the gym owner if he had a room available to rent as I would like to set up beauty there (as my hubby had told me there was nothing there like that).

The gym owner was really keen and said there was a room but it currently had a lie down sunbed in there which was not being used and he would have to get rid of that first. This was about 2 and half months ago.

I went up last Thursday to have a look at the room as they had got rid of the sunbed and he wanted to make sure I felt comfortable with the room and we'd discuss rent and stuff.

The room is approx 10ft x 8ft and it needed new lights, new flooring, a sink with hot and cold water and a lick of paint. We both agreed on £50pw, on a 6mth trial to start with and then if we're both happy we would then run with a 12 monthly renewing contract afterwards. I got it all in writing to - was so chuffed!

Well on the Thursday I never measured up properly and because he really wants me to do spray tans I needed to know what room I had to play with so I could plan my layout and stuff, so I poped up there yesterday and 'OMG' they had changed the lights and got a sink in and connected up (already) and the floor was also there ready to lay.
- wow that was quick work I thought.

So while hubby was in the gym me and my 2 and half year old went for an innocent walk down and up the high street to see what competition there was in the way of beauty rooms/shops and where I would be able to leaflet drop and hang posters.

Get this .... there are NO official beauty rooms - two are closed down and look like they hadn't been open for years, there are quite a few hairdressers and only one had beauty within so I grabbed their price lists and headed off. There's an American Nail place (which I don't rate) and two big established fitness gyms (as well as the one I will be working within) about 5 minutes car drive away all with beauty within but at a high treatment cost.

I don't really have a client base myself as I only really do friends and family when they need me, so I'm starting from the bottom. The gym is going to do a press release once I'm established as the room is going to benefit their recent press releases where they have been enticing more women in, they said they will also put a board outside their main door which looks onto the shopping square and I was thinking of doing a leaflet drop around the local shops and housing estate that there is as well as get some A3 or A4 posters done and hang around in town. I was also going to see about putting some flyers into the free paper that gets handed out locally once a week.

I've kind of planned what treatments I'm going to do and they consist of facials, body treatments, manicure and pedicure, spray tan and waxing with products such as jessica or leighton denny, dermalogica (eventually) and I'm looking into tanning products.

I wondered if any of you had any suggestions / advice for me, I'll take anything on board.

Thanks Clair

Hi Clair!

Wow what a great opportunity you have their, good rent price and no competition - well it couldnt get better than that!

Perhaps as your new there you could do some leaflets for 15% off first treatment for all new clients?
Perhaps you could have an opening day where all treatments are half prices or 25% off when you first open?

hths and good luck x

Well congrats to you, you must be so excited

If you search the threads there is lots of info about marketing, advertising etc

I would say get a website setup, get your business stationary designed, set your prices and always promote your business at and every opportunity

good luck with your new venture

it will be the best thing u ever did xx Good luck xx

Thanks guys, I haven't been on this site since some time last year and I have been taking every opportunity to read up on some of the posts previously posted, but I just thought I'd put up a thread which was specifically what I was about to do to see if I'm doing it right.

I'm up for any critisism if there is a better or other way of doing something. Yeah I know a bit about Beauty through my training but I'm about to learn a whole new ball game - and how to run a business - I will defo need some help and advice along the way.

I'm having a website done (by my mothers partner) nothing flash just enough to become online and informative, and I had thought about doing a % off discount for the 1st month, which with the low rental I have agreed should still cover my overheads.

I don't intend to take a wage from the business until my maternity pay has been reduced (in 6 months time) and then I will need to take something as we cant survive on SMP, so this should give me a good starting point financially and hopefully put a bit back in to enable me to offer more.

I'm also hoping to convert to a particular nail extensions and eyelash extension course as its been some time since I did these two treatments and feel additional training would be invaluable.
