Do you not think that because it's the first time it's happened and he has been with them for 20 plus years that they may just credit them, it's only £100 which at the moment is alot for us but nothing to them?

In my earlier post I put up a link to the BBC's advice on this, with letter templates and everything, so you can do it yourselves.
Yes you do it yourself Rachel but Martin's website advises you how to go about it. You don't pay a fee. His idea is that if you follow his guidelines the banks actually have no option but to pay out because they don't want to go to court. Take a look at his site and Pinkmummy's link. You have nothing to lose.

Here you go again, this will tell you how to get your money of them.
A strong complaint to a supervisor should do the job, otherwise use the letter template in this link.

sorry to hear of your problems ..
i had forgotten about a direct debit coming out in the beginning of the year and didnt leave enough money in the account. i got charged 39.00 and rang the bank to ask if i could pay it in weekly instalments. he put me on hold for a couple of minutes, and when he came back he said i can see from your account that you have not had any previous problems so we will wipe off the charges for you. They will do this once a year apparently. so i would definately get your hubby to ring them again, as if they are anything like my bank (halifax) they may be able to help.

We're totally broke too - hubbys using his income from his employment to pay wages for girls in the salon and we're both living on our overdrafts

He has his head firmly in the sand, which you don't seem to so that's a good thing.

No need for your husband to cry - we're in masses of debt, which is managable but leaving us short each month... and so we juggled things about a bit (well overdue)

Things we've done to help:

Balance Transferred cards
Reclaimed bank charges - all charges come/coming back
Switched mobile tariffs
Changed car insurance (£40 saving)
Switched gas and eleccy suppliers (£60 saving)
Ebayed old stock
Switched to Northern Rock for mortgage (£200 saving)

And cancelled things we don't need at the salon - internet etc... reduced opening hours.. employ my sis cheap

Ermmmm... stopped buying everything from Next for my daughter - George is fine for most things

There's lots of ways to cut costs monthly..

Don't get stressed out... it just isn't worth it.. not over money. They can't kill you for it, or take away those you love most... so relax

My daughter doesn't go to school so thats not an option and yes we do need the money. As much as I hate selling him, we need the money, and normally I would give free to a good home if there was a valid reason for doing so.

Thanks for this info. We cant change out gas and electricity cos we are on a capped rate which is much cheaper than the current prices. We pay £72 a month for gas and electric and are always in credit so I called them this morning and asked for the DD to be reduced and they assesed my account and said NO. These people are so helpful.

My daughters clothes all come from Ethel Austins as my aunt is the manager of a shop and keeps all the sale stuff for me and I get another 20% off staff discount. We only have one mobile phone, PAYG so not a problem.

Car Insurance has just been renewed at a saving of £200 from our last insurer but..... our previous insurer has still been taking payments from hubby's account for 4 months at over £30 a month. I keep telling him to call and get it sorted but he hasn't yet, maybe now he will.

I will be in my nail room later sorting out all my stock. I am sure that I have loads of stuff that I can sell. Will post on geekbay when I have it sorted.

The main reason for this is because we moved in March due to our previous neighbour being noisey and abusive. He threatened me and as we had a baby I was not prepared to stay there. The rent here was alot more than we were paying but we could just about manage. Then after the first 6 months the landlord increased it by £35 a month. There was nothing we could do as we couldn't afford to move and have been struggling ever since until now when it's all come to a head.

We are applying for a council house but wont be awarded any points other than normal waiting points so it's going to be a long wait. We also have forms for a local housing association that we can apply for and the rent will be £185 a month cheaper for the same size house.

Gosh what a blur of typing there.

Thanks to all of you for your replies, any more ideas greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Rachel xx

Firstly don't panic, sit down together and compile an income and expenditure sheet, be honest round things up not down. Once you have done that contact the companies in writing telling them that you can't pay, offer a realistic amount to each of them. Most importantly ask them to stop charging you interest.

It is not just talk this is what I had to do last August when I had more going out than I had coming in (I lost my full time job and had to go part time) and had struggled since May.

It is a good idea to go to Citizens advice Bureau they have more clout than you alone and they work out for you exactly how much to offer each company. It does take a couple of months for them to stop the interest, but they do do it eventually.

Take heart from one who has been there and still is, my situation was worse because the accounts were in my name only, but the working outs had to be done including hubbies wage, so I still end up with no wage but at least I am managing the payments.

I have got all the CAB stuff here if you want any more info just pm me.

Do Not take out a loan it doesn't help in the long run.

Joan

sorry your having money troubles...
when my oh does the shopping he will spend a lot:irked:(because he only sees pretty labels and not the price) but when i do it i can get everything we all need for £35.less than half what he spends. if you buy brand name beans for example, try buying the next cheapest, or even the economy, . if you do this with everything you can save quite a bit off the bill each week as i have had to do. i also only buy my fruit and veg from the little veg stall down the road from me, they are mega cheap .
ps, if i was closer id have looked after your rabbit til you got back on your feet xx

have you checked that the rent increase was a legal increase? have a peek on here as landlords can only increase rent at certain times and by certain amounts. Shelter: Private tenancies

It's the other way round in this house. I am the one with no wil power in the supermarket. I see things that I think my daughter will like (fussy eater) and buy them. My hubby will get exactly what is on the list and nothing more unless he knows it's needed and I forgot to put it on the list

We can quite easily spend £80+ a week on groceries when I go so from now on my hubby is going and i'm stopping here.

Do you think I can get the interest frozen on our credit cards? We have 3 and between us pay over £130 a month in CC bills. It was stupid to use them in the first place and I can assure you they are now cut into tiny pieces but I have noticed that the balance is not going down with the payments we make cos of interest.

Rachel

i would definately write to them and ask .. explain everything to them in the letter .. work out on a budget sheet when you think you will be back on your feet and ask for that amount of times grace.
the worst they can do is say no, so its worth a try isnt it xxx

You really have to go to the Citizens Advice Bureau, as said before, they have the clout to help you.
Book an appointment, then take in all your recent card and bank statements. They will help you freeze interest payments etc. You could change 1 of your cards to another company that is offering a limited period of 0% on all balance transfers, but you MUST cut up this new card & not use it.

apply for a new one hun.. and get the money from your old ones transfered.. there are hundreds out there that offer 0% till 2008.. this is what we it.. then when the 0% finishes swop it for another card.. we have done this everytime.. then you can pay as much of the card (min payment must bepaid) as you can manage.. if you are a little better one month pay it of the card..
I agree send hubby shopping with a list.. work out what you are having for dinner that week then write him a list to get what you need.... this will help alot..if your daughter is a fussy eater (going to sound cruel now) put what you are having on her plate, she may not eat it at first but trust me she will not go hungrey, that way you can get her into a heathlier eating routen as well. oohh i could go on for ever with advise, i sound like a right cheap scate:lol::lol::lol:

I have read the link and we dont have a leg to stand on. We tried appealing to his better nature but TBH i think he cares not one iota. We let the house through Jayman and they are awful. The landlord actually threatened to evict us in september due to the fact that we were reporting problems with the house, jaymans were saying it will be fixed on such and such a day and when it didn't get fixed I would call and ask y. The landlord then decided he had had enough of my complaining (!!!!) and evict us.

He seems to think that we have asked for a new kitchen when in fact all we asked for was a drawer to be repaired and door and drawer knobs that did not come off everytime you open them. I remember once saying that it could do with an overhaul in the kitchen during a conversation but I have never once requested a new one. The sink is helf up with a block of wood, one drawer doesn't open at all due to the runners being missing and the actual cupboard is falling apart. I think I have every right to ask for it to be repaired.

They tried the "but you looked at the house before you moved in" line but luckily I had e-mailed them at the time of viewing the house complaining about the way that we were rushed through the house, we didn't have time to look at the kitchen as the woman showing us stood in our way and would not move, I think she knew what we would find if we got through the door.

a quote from the site that i have just looked at says

If you have an assured shorthold tenancy, many landlords will increase the rent when they renew your tenancy agreement. It can be difficult to challenge the increase - your landlord can evict you quite easily if you don't agree to pay it.

In the end we had to pay the amount that he set. I feel that he set the rent low to start with knowing that he was going to up it at the first opportunity.

Oh well, you live and learn. He will regret making me mad when we leave here.

Be very careful hun, you could end up in serious trouble. It sounds like these people know how to exploit people renting, and you don't want them to put a spanner in the works of any future move.
Again, talk to the CAB, they if anyone can help with your rental issues.

i have to agree these people sound a bit of trouble makers if you ask me..did you get a detailed inventory when you moved in?? not just about pots and pans but about the condition of the house!! when we rented our house they did a great indepth inventory.. stating every mark on the wall and floors.. colours of the rooms, carpets and curtains, cleaness of the house. even what plants were in the garden:rolleyes:

Liz, so many times we post at the same time about stuff.
