I’ve been in the industry over a decade now and have been in various positions, full time , part time, salon, mobile. I’ve now finished having my family (4 kids) and work 2 days a week, sometimes more when I can or if I have make up bookings. I earn around £200 a week on average after expenses. I’m at a point I don’t feel overworked or pressured to earn more. I really enjoy my work and know that I can earn more in the future if I want to up my hours.

Beauty has always served me well, it’s been reliable enough that I am halfers on the mortgage papers with my husband (no mean feat as a self employed mother who has had mat leave) .

It’s not a huge income but when I did earn a lot I was overworked, stressed and never saw my family. I’m happy to finally have a balance!

I think it’s down to each individual though as to what they are happy with . X

I earn more than my parents do and I go away 4 times a year but I've been in business 8 years and work very hard.
I rented a room for 7 years and never turned a client away whatever time they wanted so I was always working very late and I was there wether I had clients or not.
Now I work Tue 9-6, wed/thur 10-8, fri/sat 9-5 and try not to go over. Booked for around 3/4 wks in advance or 5/6 in summer.
I've just expanded and now have 3 rooms and I've paid back everything it cost in the first year (about £30k) plus still took the same wage as before.

If you've got a good location, good business plan, right mindset and work bloody hard you can make a lot of money. I know I make money now because in the beginning I lived and breathed it for years and gave it my all - not saying I don't now but I don't have to put every last minute in to making and growing my business and feeling like I was at the beck and call of clients

Ok this has made me feel a bit better I just recently took a room in a hairdressers and for example today I have no bookings at all and I’m sitting here and I’ve nothing booked in the rest of the week!! I know it’s january but I’m glad to read that you came in even when you had nothing so hopefully I’ll have more soon!! I’ve had return clients last week since opening at the end of November so that’s a good sign! I also have regular spray tan clients so I’m hoping that continues too!! I think I’m panicking too soon but if I stick it out like you did hopefully I’ll have the same success!!

Hello all

I'm a mobile beauty therapist, I've lived in my area now for 2 and a half years, I've worked in salons and for Decleor in Selfridges, left beauty altogether to save money to buy a house with my now ex-husband, got married, had my babies, then started up beauty again doing mobile. Always kept my hand in by doing treatments on friends and family tho.

Then I got divorced, met my now partner and moved city to be with him. Love it but just can't seem to get going with mobile. I'm not on Facebook... good reason but loooong story ... only really chat to parents on school run .. even they seem quite clicky ... struggling to build up mobile and it's knocking my confidence quite a lot .. any advice very welcome! x

Make up a name and get yourself on Facebook. One of my clients took over a little tailoring place called Marcella's and everyone thinks it's her name. Her real name is Sharon. No one cares. My name is quite exotic but translates as church, so that's what I call myself if I cant be bothered to spell my real name. I think you'll struggle without any Facebook presence, although it's not the end of it. You'll still be able to hide behind an identity. Hth x

Hey so far it’s been on Facebook, sharing in buy and sell groups, paid posts and Instagram. I’ve also emailed all the hotels and B and B in the locality offering 10% off for staff and for guests.

I’ve asked around and people have said ads in newspapers aren’t great so no point but what do you think?

Reverse engineer what you're trying to achieve. If you were looking for your services where would you look? I know for me I google everything so normally involves website being made and Google Ads, however, it's not cheap so it's not an immediate solution.

I've built several websites for geeks :)

I'd agree newspapers probably not worth it. I'd look to get a professional leaflet design done and if you haven't already, professional logo and branding and do a leaflet drop yourself.

Chances of businesses being interested are slim I would have thought. You need to go door to door residential unless that's not your target client :)

Absolutely, you want to be putting out hundreds, if not thousands! Get your walking shoes on :)

Hope you've gotten a little bit busier!

Would the hairdressing girls mind you talking to their clients? Buzzing around them making teas, generally telling them about your business or even offering a short service while they are getting colour etc will give you something to do and surely you would get at least 1 treatment done? :)

Hey I’ve been doing this a lot but I have slacked on that lately but I might go back to socialising again downstairs because the girls in hairdressers are unreal at pushing me like I love them!! I have fallen on my feet with them so I’m hoping the custom just goes up a bit??

I’ve done some more training like my Lycon and gonna do eyelashes next!! I think I need to stand out more!!
