When I file away at the edge to remove excess I sometimes file away the pattern leaving a white edge, I am quite heavy handed in everything i do, could this be the problem? I do however use a minx curved file and minx crystal file please help

Sounds like you are holding the file at the wrong angle it needs to be at a 45 degrees angle, work with the file pointing towards the palm of your clients hand.
What your doing is filing with the point of the file pointing towards you more and you are removing the pattern layer exposing the white adhesive layer.
Hope this makes sense :)

So in same way as pointing file to sole of foot when doing toes, brill thanks for the advice xxx

Yes it needs to be at an angle rather than straight up and down a bit like this /
