Hi,

I'm 21 years old and have an NVQ L1 in hairdressing from when I was at college and a certificate in salon services..

I have worked in Toni & Guy aswell but had to put my career on hold when I had my kids so I havent been in hairdressing for about three years now.

I really want to continue learning and become a fully qualified stylist, Do you think 21 is too old to be starting from scratch? Or should I just follow my dreams and persue it?

Also how would I go about getting back into it? I have emailed a couple of salons locally to ask if they would consider me for any apprentice roles that come up and have only had one responce back saying that they would pass my CV on to the manager but no further communication lol

I litterally think about hairdressing 24/7 theres not a day that goes by when I'm not doing or thinking about something hair related, I'm so passionate about it but just stuck on what to do next.

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks :)

Oh bless you sweetie, 21 too old lol

Welcome to Salon Geek by the way. You will get numerous replys my darling many of us came into industry in our 40's and beyond. It is never too late to fulfill your career dream. You now have the advantage of life experience so you will come back with real passion xx

Do it!! I'm in a salon where they train privately, altho it costs a few thousand you get trained within 6-9 months and intensive, you seriously pick it up so well and the money you could be earning pays off for paying all that out to train, there's no age limit either lol! But if your that passionate it might be worth honking about of you don't get an apprenticeship?? Hth and you fulfill your dream :D xxx

Aww hun, you should defo do it. I started my Level 2 at college when I was 26 and I'm just coming up to completing my Level 3 and also in the process of opening my own salon.

Have you tried local colleges? I have 2 little ones and did my training on a Saturday, although I went in through the week when childcare permitted.

21 is definately not too old to go into the industry, if you've got the drive and determination you can do it no matter what age you are.

I'd highly recommenend college and getting some voluntary work within a local salon so that you get the much needed salon experience.

I'll see if I can find you a link for your local college and pop it on here asap.

Good luck in whatever decision you make and YOU CAN DO IT x

Thank you all for all the lovely messages, I now feel alot more confident about going into training again :)

Thanks for the links, I will check them out ASAP :D
Can I ask, was it hard to fit college in with your kids?

Xx

Oh god you are far too old to start again, 21! Jeez, I wish I was 21! :)

Go for it!! You've got an even better reason to follow you ambition now, your children!

I was 25 when I had my first baby, then 26 with my second. But when my youngest was a year old I decided to do a degree. It was hard work trying to organise the children and make sure I had childcare while I was at Uni. I also ran my own business and looked after the house, the dog, the other half etc..... You get the drift. But as long as your organised you'll manage it!
Plus, I'm not sure about your earnings, but you may be entitled t some help with childcare. If you're entitled to tax credits and depending on your income, then you can get help with up to 80% of the cost of childcare.

I've taught lots of girls who've gone back to college after their kids and they've loved it!

Good luck. :).xx

Haha, Thanks @Dinky :)

I've actually just recieved a phonecall from saks :O

I have an interview for their training scheme! (Apprentice hairdresser)

I am excited and also a little nervous haha :D

xx
