Hi guys

Just after some geeks opinions please. After being out of the game for a while I have retrained and started doing eyelash extensions. At the time I thought I would just be doing eyelashes and named my business to reflect that (bought a domain name etc) Ive now got the beauty bug and decided to train in spray tanning too and just wondering if I should set up a new business with a different name for my spray tanning. (Im mobile by the way)

Just because Im thinking that people are more likely to go to a company for spray tans if their name screams spray tanning, rather than lashes. I dunno just a psychological thing I suppose.

Im just thinking about any difficulties I may have with this, of course there's the obvious extra cost, separate websites separate telephone numbers etc.

Do any of u have any experience of this and would you recommend setting up a separate business for different treatments or is it too complicated?

Many thanks

L x

I have the same problem my first business is Nathalie's nail. so do I keep this name with my tanning compangy or I do each of the a business card but with the same phone numbeer? Because with vista print the business card are not expensive at all. So do I go for 2 business card or just one? thank you

You'd also have to keep two lots of accounts and fill in two tax returns:(.

You could also, unintentionally, get caught out with something that HMRC calls "artificial separation". This is where one business is split up into smaller ones to ovoid VAT registration

why would complicate things so much, you could always do double sided leaflets and cards or just add now doing etc or alternate the headings but why would you do 2 seperate accounts and the cost of 2 phone numbers lol The more you can keep your costs down the more money that goes into your pocket x

I think Ive decided on the two separate companies thing. It doesnt bother me about separate accounts and tax returns I can manage that and I dont think ill be earning enough for vat registration.

Yeah I was just thinking do any other geeks do this, just wanting to know about the practicalities of it. I can set up two websites for free and link them both to eachother. I have just ordered two free sim cards from o2 £5 month pay as u go even if I just use one for business I would just have to answer phone 'hello Luisa speaking' rather than name of company, or does this sound unprofessional?

Just getting a general concensus from mates they think its better to have spray tan company that says 'spray tan' rather than lashes.

Hiya, It sounds like you've made your mind up ;) but here's some more things you need to think about if you want to run two businesses.

  • Two insurances
  • Two bank accounts
  • Recording your business mileage will be more difficult
  • Websites need 'hits' to increase their search engine ranking. One website with keywords for both spray tanning and lash extensions will get, potentially, double the hits of one website offering just one service (hope that makes sense!)

I think it would be best to keep it as one business.
It could become confusing for clients too.
I know from experience clients prefere to get everything done at one place/ all together.
I think from a clients point of view, it looks good that you are adding more to your treatment menu.
What happens if you want to learn more after the spray tan? Another business for waxing, another one for massage?
What is your business called?
Can you not just add " and beauty"
Or also now specialising in spray tan?
Or can you not buy a new domain name & get your other website address to bounce to it?
You say it doesnt bother you about separate tax returns etc, but why bother creating all that extra work for yourself, when it can be avoided?

How about doing yourself a list of pros & cons? x

nbreault - I knew someone who just did nails then did spray tan, she just added spray tan to her treatment menu even though she was still called "******** Nails" - no problem.
Just keep your nail name & let your clients know you now do spray tans x

I have to agree - keep the same. I started as Chellies Nails now look at my website. I edited my website to incorporate new name by just adding Beauty FX and dropping 'nails' just make a note on tax return etc of change of name. When my domain name came up for renewal I just changed it. When doing your website make sure your search engine lists the treatments you do. Then if someone searches spray tans you will come up.

Keep it all simple - trust me from someone with experience!!

where can I get a free website? is it only the template that is free or the everything. thank you

I don't know about free website but I done mine through 123.reg.com I paid about £45.00 per year and got loads with it.

Ive tried a few free sites and my head has been done in. I tried vista print as it was free for a month, then when that ran out I used Google sites which is really confusing, then i tried 123 reg who I bought my domain name with but they dont have very many themes so I cancelled that. Ive just opened a weebly one tonight and cant believe how easy it is to set up, I would recommend if you are just starting out. Its free for everything. I bought some stock photos from istock which cost a few quid like.

My eyelash extension business is called Lash etc... my mobile spray tan company is called Golden Touch. Damn im really confused now, I liked golden touch, I been singing the razorlight song all day 'im the girl with the golden touch' haha

Will have to think about it now...

Thanks guys
