this is a good thread!!! i dont think ive ever left a rep point for anyone! i forgot all about them! :irked:
thanks for reminding me!!!! xxxx

Well as I have said I am not the quickest at some things and have only just found this option and will certainly be using it from now on:hug:

Now I know what it must feel like working in Mc Donald's ..you know when your rep points go up it must be a bit like when the girlie behind the counter has 4 star's on her badge and it striving for that final gold star...would you like fries with that ?..or do you want to go large for .45p extra?

The rep system, is a brilliant way of showing you appreciate your fellow geeks.

I always rep for good concise and practical advice......especially on the skin and hair forums of which I know nothing, but when someone answers a technical question, in a way that even I understand...then they definitely deserve some rep!!!

MY fave to rep is a newbie, who has been asking loads of questions, then finally answering one with the knowledge and confidence he/she has gained. I think that rep is well deserved.

The same goes for personal posts in chit chat, the common sense, practical answers will always get my rep. Although I do tend to stick more to the main Forums.

I cant believe so many Geeks didn't know about this.......you only see the last 5 given so you may have missed some, and the feel good feeling that comes along with them.

I wish we could still se the last rep we have given too....as I hate to repeat my self in my comments!!

ps: Just read this back...I certainly don't get any for being concise lol:lol:

Well I think I will have to take a part time job at Mc Donald's so I get some of them there gold stars to add to my rep point's...oh and some free fries also:lol::lol:

You do learn something new everyday. I just checked to see if I had any rep points. Thanks to the geeks who gave them to me.

And now I know how to give points too.:)

ok so this is now adictive..just checked my points...have just got a rep point for the rep point thread-thanks:lol::lol:

Right if I can keep this up maybe won't need to get that part time job after all just to get them gold stars:lol::lol:

In days gone by, I used to give out loads of rep points - often using "my allowance" everyday!

I liked the "feel good factor" of knowing that I had made someones day, especially as the more rep points you have, the more reps you can give to other geeks.

Recently, I haven't bothered so much as I feel that it isn't always reciprocated - that is when you spend a lot of time and thought on a thread, it is either missed or overlooked!

I think that GMG has got a happy balance with the rep system, with being able to rep whom ever you like BUT ensuring that you have to spread the "Lurve" before repping the same person within a short period of time!

Perhaps I need to get back into the rep mentality :wink2:

They dont call me blonde for nothin, i didnt realise you could give rep till recently ! ive just looked at mine and ive had a few so thank you - you know who you are  i will start repping away from now on but only if i feel they are worthy of it, i dont think we should give rep willy nilly, it should be well deserved.

sorry im being blonde again  ive often wondered ~ what is the blue bar under our username for ? is it something to do with how many posts you've posted ? how often you log on or something? mine seems to have stayed at the same level for ages :(

It's the number of posts.

The rep system has been set up so that you cannot rep the same person again without having spread the lurve around to (I think) another 10 people.

This is supposed to stop people only repping their friends unless they have loads of friends and spread the lurve LOL.

The negative rep system was disabled some time ago because people were abusing it and also people were getting upset sometimes.

Hope that helps a bit.

Ok so the neagative rep system was disabled due to abuse...and a good job to:hug:
It is far better to focus on the posative and I can see that the rep system is highly effective in doing just that.

well here is the but....but what means ,aside of the automated means, are in place to prevent abuse of this facility also??
Do the Mod's spot check rep points..and if so what is the conciquence to the individual who has abused the system???

You ask an awful lot of question about the site, moderators etc.

Thinking of setting up your own one Collin?? Sounds like a bit of market research to me, lol.

I hardly ever use Reputation points, I always forget they are there. I know thats terrible, because I've received some really nice feedback. I do when I remember though or if something really hits me.

I wouldn't think people abuse them though, we are very gentlemanly around here you know (if you know what I mean:eek:).

well apart from the time aspect with there being so many members it would also be a boring job....i think to a certain degree we like to think that we are all grown ups on here and trust that no abuse of the reps would be done...i cant see what it would achieve personally.

The fact that we have to spread the love before repping again is a brill idea and helps to prevent rep abuse...however...just cos you have to spread the love doesn't mean you cant give a thumbs up to someone you have repped recently ... just do it on there profile page.:)

Clearly if the old bad rep system was ceased due to abuse it clearly follows that there are individuals who do abuse systems...my question is therefore a valid one and one worth thinking about....how are rep points policed other than by automated means?

What could be achieved is that if someone had enough "mates" or got together with a group they could well increase their position without having really contributed...in other words...without authentication and through abuse the rep system could become meaningless..we could all grow massive blue bars without actually having earned them properly:hug:

As far as I am concerned it would be virtually impossable for me to abuse the system as im not called "billy no mates" for nothing other than good reason :lol::lol:

Just a thought though hey??

The old system was abused because you did not have to leave your name and some people were leaving quite unkind comments for others as they thought they could not be identified.

Even if you had the most rep on the whole site, what benefit would you really get - ask Sassy as she probably has the highest or Sandi.

Do they get the key to the executive washroom in airports, do they get special treats from being on here?

At the end of the day what do you actually want to know?

Thank you Fiona..my point exactly...why would anyone want too...!!!...what would be the point.

I could see why "some" abused the neg reps...cos some are twisted... but abusing pos reps...

Ohh and in the old days of neg and pos reps...it was said that those who started threads bitchin about them would get a bunch load of negs...:)

Is that part of the deal when you've got over 3-4000 points?
Do we have to apply in writing to get the key?

Seriously though, no special treats, no frills, nada, just the knowledge that we've helped lots and lots of members who decide to rep us for our trouble, it's a nice feeling to know our replies have helped

I think it would be fair to say "nothing in particular"..simply as a frequent user I am simply asking a question based on the infomation which has come about from my origional posted question.

Not so sure about getting the keys to the city or washroom for that matter realy answers the question constructavley...but as one has previously posted some do look at these things when either asking or responding to a posting/question etc...

The rep point system is wonderfull and given that you operate it there clearly is a "value" to having them...so I guess many would therefore relish the idea of getting as many as they could.

In other words it does apear that some do in fact look at the "cradentials" which are shown...cradentials to be of any worth do need to have been earned in the correct manner.

Obviously it would be completly impossible to verify every Rep point awarded and all that was being asked was what were the means of doing just that if any at all.

A wee bump for all those newbies out there as well as a reminder for us all.....its all doom and gloom time of year, lots of financial and family worries and the politicians and banks certainly aren't helping any now are they.

So spread some cheer...rep someone today if they offer constructive input, simple advice,a different slant on things or simply make you chuckle inside and brighten up your day

To give is far better than to receive

Hope I don't get slapped down for trolling up old posts
