Hi all,

Do you let your staff smoke on the clock? Electronic cigarette of course?

all 3 of my staff used to smoke. which i never liked - due to the smell of it and then treating clients etc.. Then they all gave up as i restricted the smoke breaks.

Now they all on E-cigs. And they are smoking it everywhere in the salon. not in front of customers though! but between clients, when they are cleaning, between 2 clients.. etc. Nowdays there are keeping them where the fridge is and i see them all the time standing there!

What do i do? coz if i say smoke on your break they will deffo strike.. i mean, they smoking it doenst bother me, what does though the time! they stand there for 5mins - and in that time i think other useful things can be done!

Do you let your staff smoke? if so, how many times a day? do you deduct from their hours?

Thanks for your help!!!

... You do not have to give staff smoke breaks, you only have to give them the20-30 mins dinner breakthrough are entitled to just like if they worked anywhere else.
Think they have a bit of a cheek tbh, maybe if you say they can have smoke breaks but they can be deducted from their pay at the end of the week they'd soon not want them ... Lol ... (By the way I have been a smoker ...!!! )

Maybe I'm to soft but I love my elecy ciggy . It personally wouldn't bother me as long as not in front of clients . Much better than them smelling of smoke etc .

it didnt bother me until now, but now they are there ALL the times, smoking. When they could be cleaning the pots and etc..
of course when i ask they say all is done, but you know you always find something that could do with a little more cleaning.

so i dont know if i should ban it totally or deduct it coz i feel this 5mins deductions are ridiculous. but on the other hand, what about the other staff who doesnt smoke?! right?

I worked somewhere before no salon related and it really annoyed me that the smokers got *** breaks i felt it was unfair to non smokers.
Also thr last salon i worked in i was the only non smoker the amount of time people spent going for **** was a joke

This was always my bugbear. If you were a smoker, a ten minute *** break seemed acceptable but if you were a non smoker it was never really acceptable to just stand outside and do f all for 10 minutes.

I was a smoker in a job where you had a lunch break and you crammed as many **** as you could into it. It was never acceptable to just disappear on a *** break.

My daughter (also my employee) is addicted to the Kim Kardashian game. She could maybe go on a Kim break as the complete lack of awareness when she's playing it does my head in.

I think any time out for a *** break whether real or e has to be requested and approved I'm afraid otherwise it's just known as skiving lol

I agree, i may give them 3 times 5minutes outside of their 30mins lunch break to go out and smoke, i mean to sit in the staff room and smoke.
and at the end of the day that will be 15mins deducted.

or i can say i dont mind how many times you take smoke-break - it will be always 5mins taken off your hours. (4times - 20mins)

and e cigs can only be used outside or in the staff room.

do you think this is acceptable?

sometimes my receptionist cant go to use to loo coz we are that busy but the therapist can go and stand by the fridge smoke their e-cigs - Just not fair! Something must be done.

Are you saying they gave up smoking normal cigarettes solely because you restricted their smoking breaks?

I personally think the E-cigs look ridiculous but agreed much better than actually smoking a real cig & stinking of it in the salon.

I think they are taking the Micky! Those 5 min *** breaks soon add up & your paying them for that :-/ the break that they are entitled to should be where they should go smoke. It's not fair for the non smokers in my opinion. Put your foot down xx

I won't let anyone smoke an e cig in my salon! 🙊 I ask them to go outside!

I'm a smoker and I don't think it's acceptable smoking an e cig for five minutes whilst in work. They can smoke their ecig till their hearts content in their break, but no, I'd expect my employees to be working otherwise. Xx

Iv worked many different jobs, office work, Barclays Bank, warehouse, retail, and even fast food in my previous life before beauty but in none of these jobs were you given *** breaks ...
Just because you have a spare 5-10 mins between clients that is not entitlement to a 5 min skive ... Wether it's **** or elites ... X

Thanks all! i think its sorted then. I just didnt want to seem a b*tch to tell them what to do in every minutes, but its gone a bit too far now, and i think i need to address this problem.
i dont think they will be very happy about this!

Thanks again x

Go in their confidently lovey. You will be fine. X

Deduct *** breaks from their wages. As long as you're giving them a lunch break or dinner break and maybe 15 mins during the day you don't need to let them nip out for **** or rather smoke in your salon. It doesn't look professional although it's not physically doing harm.

I work in a salon with one other girl, the hairdresser. She smokes, I don't. She is meant to smoke in the kitchen, at the back door with it open. Sometimes she is in the kitchen with the door closed and smoking.

If I go in to get clients drinks or a drink for myself I have to put up with the smoke, but come out smelling of smoke for the rest of the day. On occasions my clients have said to me, "I didn't know you smoked?" Obviously I have said I don't, it's the other girl smoking in the kitchen so now I smell of it. Everyone has said it is a work place, a public place, so she should not be smoking at all. It's against the law.

I need to speak to her again and ask her to only smoke at the back door with it open. But I'm too soft and just can't pluck up the courage to tell her.

If you have the courage then you. We'd to tell them that whilst they are at work, they can't smoke at all except in their own time and out of view of clients. Smoking of e cigs are also barred in quite a few public places.

I think it's ok to let them have 1 morning and 1 afternoon *** break (it would save irritable symptoms of not having one) as long as it's litterally just a quickie, (I probably wouldn't be very nice if I diddnt have a cig all day!) when I let the smokers do it I tell the non smoker to go do something she wants to at the same time so they don't feel left out, I wouldn't let anyone smoke an e cig inside tho not even customers! I tell them they can't do it inside, I make a face 😳 and say oooo you can't smoke that in here! They look all shocked and then I say oh it's just an ecig is it 😉 but they usually put it away and go outside when another person goes to smoke, I don't think it's appropriate to do inside the salon tbh wether it's safe or not

I'm afraid I would consider anyone attempting to smoke anything in the salon as misconduct and issue a warning.

Staff contracts contain our regulations on smoking.

You can smoke during your lunch break and must not be insight of the salon, whilst doing so you must wear clothing that covers your uniform. Upon your return you must wash your hands, clean your teeth and ask another member of staff if there is any smell of tobacco about your person and use breath mints prior to treatments.

There are no cigarette breaks during the day "e" or otherwise. Should there be a quiet period permission may be asked and granted if all duties are done.

I once had a facial from a smoker and it was repulsive.

Failure to comply invokes disciplinary procedures.

All staff are instructed to to inform colleagues should they be a little less than fresh, I know it's awkward but no one wants to smell bad breath/body odour/cigarettes etc during a treatment.

If you don't like it, you're in the wrong job. I'm a smoker and have never smoked whilst at work. I would expect nothing from staff that I am not prepared to do myself.

every job I have ever had, everyone has always been entitled to cigarette breaks. usually the non smokers go make a cuppa or something whilst the smokers have a quick crafty ***!

I've always seen in my experience, if the manager is a smoker then it's acceptable and if manager isn't a smoker it's less likely allowed.

takes 2 minutes to have a ***, I don't think it's a huge deal as long as they are not taking the piss. I don't see e-cigs a problem either along as it is not in front of clients. do they smell? if they smell then maybe not..

I'm a smoker and no matter where I have worked I have one first thing in the morning before leaving for work, one on lunch and however many after work! I would never expect a *** break and when I tried e-cigs I smoked them outside like it was a real cig. Wouldn't dream of using it inside the work place. I assumed that was how it was done? They look like u r smoking because if the clouds of vapour, ok it disperses very quickly with no smell but I just think it should be taken outside. Maybe it's habitual but I smoked my e-cig outside my own house lol!! In the end the taste was too rank n I went back to my Lamberts. Tell them to treat it like a normal cigarette and they should only be smoking in their lunch breaks. May sound harsh to them but it's not unreasonable, add up all those 5 mins per person per week! That's a lot of lost hours I bet. Sorry if I'm repeating anything, I didn't read the entire thread x
