Hi guys, I'm 9 weeks away from completing my svq2 course and on Friday I'm facing a job interview which also entails a trade test! I'm absolutely terrified and excited at the same time!! I'll need to do a colour and blowdry and although I'm confident to do the latter I'm dreading colour service! What if I do something wrong?:(( its only a graduate stylist position and the employer knows I'm still in training but I have no confidence in myself although I'm a good student and so far I'm the top of my class ( my lecturer's words lol)... Sorry for waffling on here, just wondering if anyone has any tips that maybe useful. Thanks!! Xxx

If they're happy with your work then you could be on to a winner. If they're not happy with your work you won't have to see them again anway....that's how I tend to think of these things anyway.

They will also want to see what you're like as a person so try to enjoy it and see it as an experience.

Some things can also come down to opinion in that one employers idea of "good" might be different to another employers idea of "good". Therefore don't feel that if someone doesn't like your work that you have to take thi personally.

Best of luck with it :)

Be there 10 mins early to show dedication and good time keep
Smile.......a lot!
Be professional, and talkative
Concentrate
Take control with your client, e.g. show them where to sit
Try your product selling skills (This is time to shine!)
And the most important bit out of everything......have fun! haha, this will be one of many trade tests in your life, just like interviews so be confident in yourself, your there because they picked YOU as maybe a great addition to their team. Good luck: D

No employer is going to expect a graduate stylist to be senior stylist standard. Trade tests at that stage are generally to ensure that you are capable of being safe. Salons expect to train young stylists further, but need to see your current level of work.

Thank u so much for your advice, that's what I think as well but for me hairdressing is my dream come true that's why I'm so nervous! I've waited over 10 years to be where I am now-law degree later and a dangerous move to leave a secure full time job and here I am nearly qualified hairdresser and this job would be an icing on the cake.

Go ahead hunny! Do your thing! Your obvs a very intelligent woman, so use them skills to wow your new employer, If I was looking at a new stylist I would look for :

Presentation of appearance, (tip: keep hair off the face, show a fresh clean face, minimal make-up)

Attitude towards work, keen, dedicated and ambitious! (and you sound like you tick all those boxes)

Communication skills and body language

Also do some home-work on the salon beforehand, and ask questions about the salon, this shows your interest in the salon as a name and not just a ''J-O-B''
:D

I need to take my own model, I think I talked my friend into it but I'm dreading to make a **** of the colour!!! The salon uses matrix just like us in college... My friend is about base 3 with lots of build up on the ends ( lots of dodgy box colours!) and she wants to go "plum" or even slightly red but am I right in thinking that bleach bath is unavoidable given her current state of the hair! I really don't want to make it difficult for myself on the day but she wants to go lighter and I can't see a straightforward answer to that!0.o xx

Hmmm, it does sound like you have given yourself a task there! But I’m sure you can do it! I don’t use matrix, blue rinse is a pro when it comes to that brand, so you could use him for any future references. I use Wella. So base 3 is dark! one shade up from black, wow! I would bleach bath with 9%, and really get that black out, don’t worry about it going ginger, that’s good, it will create a good base for the red/plum colour. So next step is applying the tint. If you can get the same permanent colour in a semi-permanent range then apply the permanent to the root area first, and then midnights and ends where you have bleach bathed apply the semi. So for instance, If I was using permanent colour of 77/46, I would then use semi-permanent colour of 77/45 on mid lengths and ends. :) Hope I haven’t confused you :(

No u haven't confused me! That's exactly what I was thinking- bleach bath then a semi if pos... I've done a colour correction before although it's more of a nvq 3 job my lecturer was confident I could do it... And I did! So at least u confirmed I'm on the right track lol.thank u xxx

No worries! You will do fine! Colour correction is the best part of colouring for me i love it! :D You go in there and show them what your made of! Let me know how it goes, ill keep watching this post :D x

I will do, hopefully my friend wouldn't leg it last minute, hate unreliable people!:( xxx

have a back up model if possible! thats what ive learned from experience, im sure you will be great, let us know how you get on x

I know it's not something that should technically be done, but maybe ask a friend who's hair you have done before, you already know the hair so it makes it easyer. And maybe a friend who will give you free reign on what they have done. Gives you a lot more options to show off something a bit more wild and not the standard norm of a single colour all over xoxo

took the words out my mouth (so to speak)

they will be expecting you to be able to do a full head tint application, so do something that the other ppl getting tested might not to stand out.. even if its a few flashes with different tones have a look online for inspiration,

i know the Schwarzkopf website has some fab styles, but i would say that!!

i know its hard to find these days but a model with virgin hair would be perfect!!

Good Luck x x

you could even cut the hair prior to the test to the shape you want and then on the day alter it so you dont feel as much stress.. i know that defeats the point but youv still done it just takes the pressure off a bit. ppl will disagree but i bet we'v all done it!!

Thanks again for your support guys, trade test tomorrow at 1pm! God help me! Lol xxx

This is going to sound so stupid, but try buying ''Bach’s Rescue Remedy'' from boots, I used it on my driving test and it worked like a treat, it really helped, it has a 5* review on lots of sites, I can’t recommend it highly enough! :D xx
