I'll be starting my diet for the hundredth time tomorrow too.
I've got a school reunion in August (we're all 50 this year) and I wanted to knock-em-dead with my slim gorgeousness.
However, as I've only got 9 weeks in which to lose 3 stones, I think I'll be resorting to the big 'hold-me-in' knickers again.
If I added up all the money I've spent on slimming pills, diet drinks, meal replacements, slimming club fees etc etc, I could've paid for a gastric band twice over. :grr:
If Fern is determined to beat her weight problem, then I think she's right to use whatever 'prop' she feels will help her best. Just wish she'd shared it with us sooner though !

They all lie.
People lie.
They use botox.. they use whatever they can get their hands on.
This is just magazine cr*p.
Next thing you will tell me models don't eat tissues.:irked:

True I used to think oh how silm or pretty so and so is then I saw them in the real pics not the touched up ones lol

i'm a short arse and a size 14, so can look a porker but hey god willing i'm happy and healthy ! i'm going to a funerel tommorow, a friend of mine (42) died last week and i know she would love to be here moaning about something as trivial as being a couple of stone overweight or a gastric band

yep. we should all be grateful for what we do have, lifes too short for some people,we can all wish, but thats life:)

Obviously there are a lot of misconceptions about the band so I'm going to clear a few up.

The band may physically restrict the amount you eat but you can eat around the band and put on weight. The band is a tool you need to work with to eat healthily and exercise. If you sat down and ate a tub of ice cream a day you'd still put on weight with the band.

For anyone who thinks it's easy, they've taken the easy way out etc etc etc, you haven't sat watching someone in extreme pain in hospital where they are wishing they would just die because of a lap band complication that required emergency surgery and was on the verge of kidney failure.

Once you have the band you have to watch everything little thing you put in your mouth or you can end up with severe chest pain that feels like you are having a heart attack that can last several hours. Also, if you don't watch what you eat you can vomit which can cause problems with the band which means that you need emergency surgery from the band slipping and strangeling your stomach.

Life post band is not a walk in the park that uneducated people think it is.
The weight doesn't just melt off without eating sensibly and exercise.

As for people who say they are disappointed in someone taking control of their life and doing what they need to to ensure that they will be alive in another 1,2,5,10,20 years - well, I can't post on here what I think cause I'll be banned in 5 seconds. Why does she need to tell the world that she was banded and why do people need to feel that they approve of her decision or not? It was her decision. Everyone should be happy that she is happy, healthy and is not a heart attack waiting to happen.

If some of you knew the massive life changes you need to make with the band, being fat and eating whatever the hell you want is easy in comparison.

...........being fat and eating whatever the hell you want is easy in comparison.

I agree with everything you say up until that last bit. As some one who is well, rather chunky, and desperately weak willed when I try to diet and make changes for the better I would say being 'fat' as you so nicely put it is anything but easy.

As I have previously posted the word disappointed I would like to clarify exactly what I meant.

I could not care less which way Fern has lost her weight "live and let live" is my mantra.

I am delighted for her that she has found something that has helped her and made her happy to achieve her goal.

My disappointment stems from the culture of "half truths and downright lies" that seem IMO to pervade our society.

If someone CHOOSES to benefit financially from endorsing diet type products (as Fern has done with Ryvita) or excercise dvd's (as Jade Goody did and was later revealed as a sham) or TV programmes (as Anne Diamond did on Celebrity Fit Club )

Then is it really too much to ask that these people (who stand to gain SUBSTANTIAL financial benefits) tell us the truth of how they are doing it and not little half truths.

It seems very much to me that they want the financial rewards but then want to bleat about how they are entitled to privacy as well.

Of course they are entitled to privacy, in all other areas of their life!!

But if they have "sold" part of their privacy they can't act wounded when it is revealed they have misled the public over that particular area of their life.

I am not great at explaining myself so I hope this reads ok

It reads just fine and was exactly what I meant too.

Fern looks totally amazing and well done her, no matter how she did it.

However making money in magazines telling us all how she did it, it a way that was 100% truthful I do find disappointing, but it is only my opinion!

Being chunky myself I don't sugar coat the fact that I'm fat and in comparison to someone who is told that they have taken the easy way out by banded, a complete life modification where you have to watch every single thing you put in your mouth from the day you are banded, even drinking fluid can make you vomit - so by saying easy, I meant physically easy to eat food, not worrying if everything you eat will make you vomit and may cause you to need emergency surgery.

Just because someone has a gastric band, it does not guarantee that they will lose weight. Plenty of banders don't lose weight and continue to put it on getting bigger. All the band does is sit around the top of your stomach to make food go through your stomach slower if you eat the right type of food.

You must eat the right food and exercise for it to work. Fern is endorsing Ryvita, but as the ad states 'can aid slimming on a calorie controlled diet.'

If you are eating a proper post-banding diet, it is severely calorie controlled because you should only be eating 1/2 - 1 cup of food 3 meals a day which should primarily be made up of veges and some protein.

A lot of people who have had the band don't want people to know they've had it because they are ashamed that they need surgery to help them and because of what other people will say.

Why should Fern have to tell anybody? She has said that she eats more healthily and exercises more and works hard at it, where is the lie in that? Why should she have to tell anybody that she has a weight loss tool to help?

If her fans have lost a few inches by following her advice then that’s fantastic news, besides after the Anne Diamond Tabloid nightmare, no wonder Fern decided to keep quiet.

We as a nation tend to criticise and aren’t keen to offer praise where its due, I say well-done Fern as her decision will change the rest of her life and actually let her live life to the full as we all know about heart disease can be a silent killer.

For someone to get a band fitted and not tell anyone is their choice and shame about needing surgery doesn't come into it!!

Im disappointed that we find out that Fern Britton has actually had a gastric band .....

Why disapointed? She has lost weight nevertheless - having a gastirc band is no easy option beleive me - I know because I had one 8 weeks ago. She probably wasn't open about it as so many people see it as cheating, and the critisism you get is unbeleivable! "You can do it - you don't need to resort to this.." etc etc

To get to the point of being so desperatre to lose weight that you would go under the knife and risk your life is one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life. I am now losing weight at a steady rate of a stone per month - something I couldnt do without help - and I tried everything.

She has still been eating more healthily, and eating less and doing more excersis - as have I.

When Fearne gets to her healthy target weight - does it matter how she gets there or if she needed a little help? I think not.....

Having a Gastric Band is NOT cheating!

well said

Do you not think she was entitled to her privacy? Ok she is in the public eye and all that but good on her for keeping quiet. Just because shes a celebrity or on TV does not mean we need to know what she does behind closed doors.

Also their are so many overweight women out there that want to lose weight but probably cant afford the £7000+ price tag for this op. You can also die from the operation so its something that should not be undertook lightly. Instead she said a healthy diet and exercise helped which is a sensible response as most woman will benefit by not eating high calorie foods and exercising more.

I don't read celeb mags or likewise. I am not interested in who these so called magazine editors call fat one week and too thin the next. I wouldnt like every move I made, or every bit of cellulite photographed and blown up for the world to see so why endorse it. I know a lot of celebs rely on magazines for exposure, but the magazines go too far. We are all entitled to have some secrets whether we are in the public eye or not.

It amazes me that even after the peoples eagerness for gossip resulted in the death of princess diana we still buy this rubbish!!! Women should be happy in their own skin and should not look up to women they want to look like. We all come in different shapes and sizes we should embrace this. Fern had the op for her health so she would be around for her kids in years to come, I wish her all the best.

Having a Gastric Band is NOT cheating!

I repeat i have no problem with her having a gastric band or anyone having anything what i am disappointed at is when asked many many times how she has lost weight and when she has appeared in countless magazines lately on the covers obviously getting paid for countless interviews about her eating and weight loss and appearing alongside eating plans this was all an extreme stretch on the truth.

Yes she had the right to not tell but she certainly has used her weight loss to her advantage why did she agree to appearing alongside diet plans in magazines knowing that maybe this was what she was eating but only small mouthfuls.

Im disappointed because she has always seemed way up front a champion for the people and had seemed an inspiration and hope for all those that have struggled and cant afford a gastic band.
I stick by what i say and in her position as often a representative for us all in many a discussion i think she should have owned up a lot sooner and i should think she probably does herself now because noone would have cared.

I must agree with Gillian,i was under the impression that Fern had lost her weight by eating healthy and exercise. If Fern was not ashamed of having a band , then why hide the fact that she has?.

Good on Fern for losing the weight, i , myself, have stopped smoking and have put on weight, but i have started biking because losing weight is more important to me than smoking.
