Its not what you say, its how you say it.

I think you're right if it's a matter of opinion, but would worry if no-one questioned something more factual. If an error has been made you should really correct it otherwise it misleads.

Yes that's exactly what I do to the best of my abilities. If I'm unsure I'd point them in the direction of geek who knows for definate.
Or a text book, website, past thread etc.

Going back to the original title of this thread, "It's not what you say, it's how you say it" I feel that if what you say is appropriate and relevant, it shouldn't matter how you say it.

First and foremost this is a professional-informational website. Feeling good and making friends may be a great bi-product but it's not the reason we're all here.

No maybe not but it does give us a great team spirit and we do get to meet at shows etc and to network as time goes on.
Some of us are actually great friends in the real world too.
And if it wasn't for the site I would have missed this opportunity.

I agree. The 'community' is wonderful and adds to people's lives in a positive way. My meaning was that those friendships aren't the reason most join professional forums in the first place - it's a lovely 'side effect'.

I think when people come here primarily looking to improve in their professions they may not be overly sensitive to the format of another geek's responses.

me too judy

lots of members dont realise that whilst this forum is very popular to thousands, in the beginning there was only a handful of members, that met up at nail shows...knew each others real names and our forum names, we met each other on here developed friendships and then met up at shows and some of us developed them more on a personal level, now we have a forum where there are so many members that no-one knows anyones true personalities.....some of us that know each other post with a wink and a nudge knowing that oldie members know our humour whilst other members will see it as being abrupt and rude behaviour when it isnt.......
new members will feel joining the site is first ..for knowledge and help in the industry
whilst old members have actually developed real friendships on here and whilst the site acts as an educational and industry support tool, to alot of us it has been the biggest tool socially and on a more personnel level,

some members know how to take people, or read people cause we know each other on a different level whilst others dont know a members humour or personality and can be very sensitive to the written word......

for newbies its easier because there are so many new members on an hourly basis, for us oldies when we joined it was harder......you came on lurked and respected the allready established members, then became comfortable with posting( right or wrong as it may be) the one thing i have noticed is some of the long standing members do get attitude whilst people who give them attitude have no understanding of these members and what they have actually done for this site over the years...that angers me more than people reading to much into a reply....

sorry totally off par but hey

I think that it comes down to one simple thing. There are nice people in the world and there are arsey people on the world. They are probably no different on a forum than they are dealing with people in real life.

People who are sly in real life are sly on forums
People who are shy in real life are shy on forums
Trouble makers in real life are trouble makers on forums
Sensitive people in real life are sensitive on forums
Jelaous people in real life are jealous on forums
Funny people in real life are funny on forums
Etc Etc Etc

That's no excuse for rudeness though. xxx

Bravo hun, what kimmi has said is spot on imo.
If you want to be a bit!h you will where ever you go, even if its to the supermarket, its what you are so you wont change if you go on a forum.

Poeple do have to think what they put sometimes on here because it can be taken personal. If i am annoyed i wont put YOU "£^*((*&%$$%&*. Thats not me. I agree with Judy,if you do have a problem with someone because they have said something you did not like then pm them. That way, your not letting everyone know how you feel and it keeps this site professional.

Perhaps we need the oldies forums lol

Perhaps we need the oldies forums lol

Would that be for geeks who are old, long standing geeks or just grumpy old geeks in general. I sort of qualify for 2 out of 3

the old farts forum..... oooooooooooooooh, please forgive me, I mean no offense:)
See... thats what I mean, me thinking ahead of myself and apologising for a post that's meant to be humorous, yet the sensitive may be offended, when no offense is meant, and if I didn't say it, it would mean stifling my personality ...... you old farts know what I mean (whoops there I go again) sorry ....umm. no I'm not, umm, yes I am .....
No but yeah, but no, but yeah. Get my drift ?

Well your 2 years behind me :) So stopping pushing in ....... No offense

It seems longer

Now that made me smile :D

I am coming up for my first anniversary and it does seem so much longer....I am but a wee child in comparision to the pensioners who frequent this land of Geekdom....:Grope:

Because I have just gone wayyyyyyyy off topic....I better put in my two penneth worth in regards to the actual topic....

Some replies are written professionally....state the point and answer the question being asked.... That really should be all it is about.....
But then this site is actually so much more....it is a mish mash of so many different things....that lines can become blurred....

I have myself got upset at replies....not actually sorted it out properly as it happens....but was so annoyed I posted before my head got into gear.
That isn't me...and not what I am about.....but these things happen.

I do have to disagree that how you 'type' is how you are in 'real' life. In 'real' life I am an intellectual....HA HA no sorry....I lost my own argument there.....

Aswell as '' It's not what you say, it's how you say it '' ..... it can also be '' It wasn't what I said, it was how you interpreted it '' .....

Anyway happy geeking....for the main part I think everything runs smoothly.... we all get hiccups from time to time....nothing that a paper bag over the head can't sort out....

I don't take offence if someone puts "luv" or "hunny" or whatever (please not sweetcheeks lol), I wouldn't see that as being condescending.

Nor do I think a professional answer with no "flowering up" is sharp or blunt.

I think the posts which are laced with sarcasm or the ones which seem like a definite put-down are quite offensive. But fortunately very rare on here.

us old farts know what you mean :lol:

i actually end things with hun or luv.....not to sugar coat or pacify but to add a cuteness of respect to whom i am answering, because i like being called luv and hun myself....in real life i actually call people "mate" thats what 13 years in portsmouth does for you.....which re-iterates what i type on here is sometimes how i dont speak in real life......which in actual fact in real life i am thick as pig **** but i totally give the illusion of utter intelligence here :lol:

Whats the point in a forum designed to give advice and constructive criticism if you have to soften everything you say? If something needs to be said, say it as it is, surely thats the best way to communicate?

If you are a sensitive soul with an aversion to capital letters, bold text, and direct advice, perhaps have a think about how you should change your outlook rather than asking everyone around to change their ways just to accommodate your over-sensitive side? Are we adults or teenage girls in the playground who run off crying at the first hint of a critical word??

I for one use this site far less these days because I cant stand the sugary neutral environment that is becoming more prevalent on here. I agree that sheer nastiness shouldn't be tolerated, but fortunately such posts are very few and far between. The majority of posts on here that are criticised for being abrupt/nasty are nothing of the sort, they are just direct comments where the poster hasn't minced their words.
