They have pestered me with two letters and two phone calls.....I am bloody mobile, I don't play music!!!

I wonder if they are phoning all the little boutiques, pizza shops, wearhouses, companys who have radio's playing for staff in offices, wearhouse/stores, doctors dentists, etc who have no licences. I think not!!!!!!

The poor girls in salons who do all the aroma therapy treatments are any of them discs copy righted by companys i hope not!

All you need to do is call them up and they will send you a letter saying you dont need a license.

I work from home and got a letter saying I dont need a license. I do not have my door open and no one can walk in off the street so I am not "Performing" - this seems to be the difference.

this is a bloody joke what about all the other shops out there who play music while your buying your food or clothes etc thats so unfair typical of the bloody government to come up with a new way to get money from us i bet its to pay for all the asylum seekers who are here or in detention centres.

You probably find that these people have paid for a licence.

I have a client who works in a hospital and each department pays a license to play music in their waiting areas.

Lets not get this out of proportion - if you get a knock on your door by someone from the PRS that is the time to worry about it.

Put your energy into growing your nail businesses and building happy client lists

You have GOT to be KIDDING ME!! You can't even play the radio in your salons because it violates copyrights? Give me a freakin' BREAK! That is nothing but outrageous! And CDs? You *bought* the darned things, isn't that enought money for those poor, broke musicians? I don't think I've ever heard anything so outlandishly stupid, even in the US (and that's saying a LOT, as I'm sure you'll agree. :) )

And yes, I AM YELLING! :D All I can say is, they better not try anything like that here in the states. It would NOT go over well!

Its all very well saying this, but in the end its like a TV licence and sooner or later one of us is going to get fined.

Rather than just ignoring it and waiting and hoping, perhaps we should all be lobbying our MPs, local councils, ANT etc. and getting together to try and make the charge fairer for those of us that have very small salons. We are being put in a bracket for playing radio of up to 30 client chairs and for CDs 5 client chairs. It seems to me that this does not accurately represent our industry where in lots of cases it would be only one client hearing the music. The amount of people hearing the music should surely make a difference.

You don't have to have a licence if you do not pay business rates on the room you use i.e. if it is a room in your house that is used for other things too. You also do not have to pay if you are mobile.

There are definately two licences the PRS and the PPL and we are supposed to have both. My guess is that if you pay one they will notify the other!

My MP has written to the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry and we are still waiting for a response, but we might need an industry response to get anywhere.

Oh well, you can lead a horse to water...........

They are targetting salons at the moment. We can keep ignoring it and keep laughing at it, but sooner or later one of us is going to be fined. I just think as a group we should be trying to fight it.

i totally agree with geeg, its gona be a case of catch me if you can. its discusting at what they are expecting salon owners to pay such a high price to play radio and cd's which we have paid for to play for our own pleasure while working away, let alone for rthe customers, and they want us to pay again? its not fair.
surely, business rates should cover things like this, especially smalll business's that struggle to keep going in the first few years.
i pay my business rates, but whats it for?, the council dont even take my rubbish away, they tell me its an additional charge to have a bin, and a charge to empty it.....i just cant get my head round it!:irked:

Think someone may have misread me there...if you look again, I was laughing at Geeg's answer...who else would have the b***s to answer a thread like that, and give us all a good laugh into the bargain!!!!

You're absolutely right it is a rediculous thing to have to pay. Unfortunately though it is apparently law and you can be fined for it in exactly the same way as TV licence. Of course they will have to catch one of us first, but it is only a matter of time I would think.

i know glynis, its makes me bloody sick, i can feel a riot coming on......

if i buy a tv licence does this cover playing music too? or would i have to pay for a PRS licence too?

That's exactly it Cheryl, we need to be getting together and sorting something out so that our industry is being fairly charged on the basis of the average number of clients we have in the salon.

I think you have to buy a TV licence plus a PRS licence to have a television which has a music channel playing on it if you are playing it in your business premises, but I will check this out for you. A normal TV licence does not cover you for "public performances".

I have just checked all the documents I have. It would appear that this is totally separate from a TV licence so you would need both (what a joke). The PPL radio licence would cover a TV though.

I just told my husband about this thread thinking it was some new scam out asking for credit card details - we have a takeaway sandwich bar - he got a call last week - they gave some initials of who they were and asked right away does he listen to music in the shop...he wouldnt answer - then they got into the pitch of who they were etc etc...

In a way I can understand if you are playing CD's because there is normally a clause on them saying for private use only and not for public use. But how can they say this with a radio? With a CD I choose the music, but with the radio it's totally at random, and half the stuff they play is crap and I can't wait for it to finish. Can I say I switch my radio off when Coldplay come on because their droning stuff makes my clients depressed? So don't give Coldplay any royalties because I don't play their stuff? I mean, who exactly does this money go to - the MP's Christmas Party? ... and then do they have a licence? :green:
