Apparently, if you play the music in staff room or kitchen so clients can hear it then you dont have to pay for a licence-its only if you have speakers directly in a salon!! Just tell them its for the staff to listen to ,if they ever show up that is.......

just been stupid i guess but if they dont need a licence in the usa etc can we get done for playing american music. They obviously have different laws.
:green:

dont you think you should pay for your entertainment? do you think that everybody who has spent time creating that music and sorting out the radio station works for free? you are getting something for it! if you dont think you should pay then make your own music, put it on CD and play that instead! that is free!

i see your point but if i play my radio in the car or at home i dont pay so why should you if its in a salon? Id wouldnt class music as entertainment. As for working for free thats certainally not the case is it. do you see beyonce driving a fiesta??/ or simon cowell at netto

When this thread came on I was feeling sorry for all of you in UK. But guess what, I got a letter today from the company here in Netherlands. And they won't even tell you what the costs are! You have to fill in the questioner and then you find out.

This is wrong. You need a licence to play music in any workplace to staff.

Plus, I have a salon at the back of my house. The hi fi is actually in my utility room (including the speakers). I told them this and they said it make no difference because the clients can hear it.

new artists dont actualy make any money till after a few albums because everybody stiffs them out of it...copyright is a way for them to get some money, there is not as much money in the music business as you think...only long term established artists who work on their own terms cos the companies need them and big companies get a lot of money.

I cant believe what I am hearing here! You dont work for the government do you? or are you a musician?

You think its justified that we can buy their CD and then get charged again when we want to play it??? The radio stations get paid from all the crap adverts that we have to listen to as well as the music. If the musicians have a tough time making their first couple of albums thats tough as far as I am concerned, let them take that up with the managers and record companies if they are being ripped off! no-one pays me any extra tax because I am getting my business up and running do they?? As has already been said, they probably sell more because people may like it and go and buy the album.

Its all a load of B*ll*x if you ask me, just another way to get money from everyone!

This is a genuine question and not designed to incite a row

Can you explain to me how us paying the PRS gets to you guys? I'm saying 'you' because (and I admit I'm reading between the lines here) you're obviously involved closely with the music industry, either a writer, musician/artiste/whatever, so can give us an insiders perspective..

How do you get your cut of the money we (potentially) pay?
How do you know how often your material is used and therefore how much you are entitled too?
How do you know you are getting all you're entitled too?
How do you get your money? Cheque once a month, Yearly, Sporadically, Never?
How much of our £X goes to you guys, and how much goes to the Society for their administration costs?

Perhaps if some of the above could be answered we might understand a bit better what we're paying for. Maybe we wouldn't resent it quite so much if we knew what was happening to the money we're charged. From where we are standing at the moment, all we see is more money going out of our hard earned turnover and nothing to show for it.

Thanks
Portia

I had a letter from them a cuople of weeks ago and on Saturday I had another on saying "with reference to our phone call....." I hav'nt had a phone call!

I am mobile so when I go to a paying clients house and they have the radio on does that count as they are paying clients or is it just salons.

I am mobile and homebased.

Hi Guys

I'd like to put in the 2 pence worth about this subject,if I may?!

I also teach aerobics and have done for the last (oh God) 10 years. We have to have a separate license to play special cd's. So I now have to pay for 2 licenses!

If I am caught playing music in my aerobic classes that I don't hold a license for it is a min of £1000 fine on the spot!! Not sure how much it is if your caught in a salon.

Oh and if you think playing naive will sort the problem out it doesn't wash anymore.........So be carefull!!

The PPL is the governing body for playing music to the public. Thier website can be found at www.ppluk.com.

Excuse me, but I BUY my CD's from the store, so I HAVE paid for my entertainment!

I havent heard of this yet in Oz, sounds ridiculous. What I play in my own home, for my own ears, is my own business.

i have studied copyright on my music degree, so i have learened about it, i cant exactly tell you all the ins and outs...if you really want to know then you should look in to it, cos its complicated...

basically it is all worked out in percentages, so they cant exactly say what goes to who...but its probably about right, radio stations have to plan in advance the songs they will play, and pay so much for some amount of tracks...they are limited to a certain ammount of songs...thats why they talk so much

with playing cds in salons....when buying the cd...u pay for your listen, but the licence covers the cost of the clients listen...thats why they work it out by how many peep u get in.
it costs...thats the bottom line, and if you guys dont like it, like i said earlier on here...make your own music for your salon (its so easy!), or dont play music at all!

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps when I'm not so busy I'll have a look into it a bit deeper and see if I can answer the questions better.

And in reply to your last sentance, no I don't like it, but fortunately I don't have to pay it, however, that doesn't mean I don't want to understand the whys and wherefores

the PRS called back today, but i was busy with a client, they continued to call every hour on the hour, (they dont give up) finally i took the call and told them i no longer play music of any kind....the reply back was 'ok,thank-you and sorry to have troubled you!'
It mite be me who ends up in court, screaming and kicking outside, appearing on news at 10. i just hope you lot are all outside, chanting and waving your banners!:| :Look_left

:grr: This is my main beef about the whole thing. To play a radio we are being banded with hairdressing/beauty salons with a maximum number of 30 client chairs!!!! I don't mind paying something, but I will only ever have a maximum of two clients in my salon (one receiving treatment and one waiting). So why am I being asked to pay for 28 other people to listen

I do not think my case as a nail tech is unusual, I think a lot of us are in the same or similar situation. If they worked it out on numbers hearing the music that would be fair enough. Which is why we need to be represented as a separate group.

By the way Cheryl, the amount of noise I am making with MPs, Trading Standards, The Copyright Tribunal, ANT, The National Hairdressers' Federation, The Office of Fair Trading etc. etc. I think I could be the other one in Court with you. Hope you don't snore at night if we've got to share a cell

Hi there

Yep it applies here in OZ also_One of the last things on the list to check into[operating from home] but on it none the less.
Once you have paid for the licence you are issued a window sticker to be displayed visibly[door /window corner as when they check they look for the sticker] If its valid you're OK if no sticker you are given time to organize it but will be spot checked & fined if you havn't.
Been around as long as I can remember working in salons can't say how often they check on it tho.
