Hello geeks,

I've been working as a lash tech for some time now and have just embarked on hair extensions.

I am qualified to NVQ2 hairdressing and 4/5 years ago I bagged a role as a stylist at an Aveda salon in London. It REALLY hurt my confidence as I wasn't particularly thick skinned at the time and it was a very catty and competitive environment. They made no secret of the fact they were judging my work and criticising (totally can take constructive criticism, just not the judgy bitchy type!)

So I left, my self esteem and confidence was battered. I just worked occasionally on friends/family and carried on with my lash extensions.

I miss hairdressing so so much. I am just over 4 weeks from giving birth and have had so much time to reflect on what I really want to do with my life and be a role model for my child. I want to get back in the salon but having trained to only NVQ2 and shattered confidence, I feel a refresher course would be a good place to start and an ideal way to build my confidence?

Would love to know what you guys think and if you could recommend anywhere please? I'm also 28 if that's relevant! :) thank you.

Xx

What about doing your level 3? You can pick up on your level 2 & learn new techniques aswell?

Id agree with level 3, you will be able to get a grant as over 24/5

Thank you ladies.

Do you not think for level three I would need to be REALLY confident in my L2 abilities?

I would worry about looking like an incompetent fool.

My colouring/theory/blow drying I am confident in and know I do a good job. It's the more advanced cutting where I am lacking confidence.

A grant sounds great, I never knew that I could apply for one of these!

Xx

I think you would be fine, youre there to learn next level of skills not expected to already know them :) id say confidence to do clients is the biggest thing, I did l2 last year and some l3s had moved straight onto l3 & were still 'resistive' to doing clients

I would enquire now as there are usually not as many spaces for l3 & they'll be getting ready to put their l2s in those spaces.

& Its the 24+ advanced learning grant I think its called

Thank you Amber!

I've just contacted my local college who do it part time.

I'm hoping it'll be one day a week and that they have crèche facilities! (I have no family locally!)

Waiting for their reply :)!

Oh that's true about the L2s going into L3! Best get booking onto it!!

If it's just cutting you need, invest in a course with Sassoon, Toni & Guy or Hob salons.
In my opinion, they're much more useful than a college level 3 course.

Thanks Haircutz, I did check out Hobs and they are quiet reasonable.

My concern would be whether or not business owners would rather a level3 hairdresser over a level 2 with extra courses under their belt?

It is most definately cutting where my confidence has been battered!

i reeeeeaaaalllllyyy want to do the sassoon abc collections cutting course!! do they only have that on in the london academy? any other geeks been on it? where did you stay?

sorry for hi jacking! good luck with it, im coming back to the hairdressing myself after a few years in civil service!:Scared:

Check out the Sassoon website for details of current courses and offers.

After your training, I think if you can take pictures of models you've done when you apply for a job and talk through the cuts in technical terms, that should level the playing field. In fact, it will probably give you an edge over the straight from college level 3 students who might be clueless about how to dissect a style into its basic components.

All salon owners look for someone who is a competent stylist and who can create a good rapport with the clients. Paper qualifications don't cut it if you can't do the job. Just prove to them you have the skills and ability that they're looking for.
